The continuum of participation is designed to empirically observe the personalised political attitudes and behaviours that characterise contemporary citizenship. This chapter outlines the foundations of this approach, the methodological challenges that come with analysing political engagement across media, and draws on contributions from Bennett, Chadwick, and Papacharissi to offer a deductive framework that challenges the hypotheses derived from the slacktivist critique.
